Step 1, Measure in 3/4” from the beginning of slit in jacket and make Mark I
Step 2, Measure in 2-1/2” from the beginning of slit in jacket and make Mark II
Step 3, Reposition ends to be spliced, facing and overlapping each other

Step 4, Insert each rope end separately into the opposite rope at Mark II and out at Mark I. One of the ropes is marked with red to ease illustration. It is helpful to pin or clamp the end of the 1st tail so it doesn’t slip back inside the rope at Mark II while the 2nd tail is being buried. The end of a Fid is shown on the section being buried. It is hollow, which allows the rope to be inserted, and has a pointed end to help separate strands. It acts similar to a sewing needle and it is pictured in Image 4.
Step 5, Pull on both tails simultaneously, to tighten up the crossover. Push slack on both ends towards the crossover, pin off each tail using Mini-Pony Clamps to allow for marking and cutting taper.
Step 6, On each tail section, mark two adjacent strands 3/8” from the end of the rope. Move down the rope skipping one strand and once again mark two adjacent strands. Cut and remove the marked strands thereby creating a slight taper. NOTE: Photo shows one tail with taper already cut and the other tail marked.
Step 7, Starting at the crossover, milk the splice in both directions, burying each tail. Repeat the milking / smoothing several times. Ends should be completely buried within the main braid.
Step 8, Using Stitch Kit, sew & lock the splice on both sides of the crossover, 4 to 5 full crowns on each side of the center point of the splice, or approximately 3 inches total. Trim off excess thread and insert into splice rail for cooking.
